UnionPay cards are accepted at more than half of merchants in Japan, covering accommodation, transportation, catering, amusement and many other daily purchasing fields with multiple exclusive privileges provided. UnionPay cards can also be used to withdraw cash in Yen at over 50% ATMs there, including ATMs of SMBC, BTMU, Mitzuho Bank, Aeon Bank, Siam City Bank and Post Bank in banks, subway stations and airports. The ATMs in 7-11, Rawson and other convenient stores also accept UnionPay cards.
Convenient payment without PIN!
At the 12,000 Rawson and 18,000 7-11 convenient stores across Japan, payment can be made with UnionPay credit cards without signature or PIN when the purchasing amount is less than 10,000 Yen, and only signature is required if the purchasing amount reaches 10,000 Yen. -
POS acceptance
Merchants with the signage of all accept UnionPay cards, covering lodging, transportation, catering and entertainment merchants in Tokyo, Osaka and other major cities. Since that some of the merchants have yet to put up the UnionPay signage, cardholders may show their UnionPay cards upon the till and inquire about UnionPay acceptance.
This region now supports UnionPay Mobile QuickPass and UnionPay QR codes. You can make payments easily at Japan Taxi, ride-hailing service S.RIDE, Fukuoka Subway, chain retailers BicCamera, LOFT, drugstore Matsumotokiyoshi, shopping center SAKURA MACHI Kumamoto, and more.
When using co-branded cards, you are advised to choose UnionPay as the routing option to be benefited from the special offers and services provided by UnionPay.Note:Some UnionPay card acceptors or acquirers route co-branded cards to corresponding card shcem according to the card BIN, which means co-branded cards transactions aren't routed to UnionPay without selection by cardholders and merchant cashiers. Please refer to the transaction results for the information about transaction routing.
Paying with UnionPay credit card at some local merchants requires no PIN. Cardholders can complete the payment following the instruction of the cashier. Cash withdrawal
In Japan, cardholders can use UnionPay cards to withdraw Japanese Yen at ATMs of Japan Post Bank, BTMU (formerly known as UFJ Bank), SEVEN Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Bank, AEON Credit Service, and Mizuho Bank, as well as the ATMs in 7-Eleven, Rawson and Family Mart convenient stores. There are the signage of on these ATMs or the ATM screen, and the ATMs provide the interface in Chinese.
Please refer to the latest government policy on overseas cash withdrawal via UnionPay cards at "Help Center-Card-using Instructions-Refined Card-using Tips". Daily cash withdrawal limit from respective issuers and/or ATM may apply. Please consult your issuer on the possible cap on the amount. You may split your withdrawals into several times which comply with the limit(s).
Some banks in Japan set a cap on single ATM cash withdrawal, which is applicable to all bankcard brands including UnionPay. Please refer to the prompts on the ATM screen for the specific amount. -
Charges
ATM commission fee consists of two separate fees:
(1) Service fee charged by the issuer: please consult your issuer for details.
(2) Service fee charged by the ATM acquirer in Japan: some ATMs will charge commission fee, which is charged by the local banks in Japan and which has nothing to do with UnionPay or the issuer.
Cash withdrawal via debit card results in a lower commission fee. -
Tips
Select PINs that cannot be easily guessed by anyone.
Never disclose your PIN to anyone who claims to represent the bank or the police.
Be alert to your surroundings before conducting any banking transactions.
Keep a close eye on your credit card during transaction to avoid any illegal activities.
If your UnionPay card has been stolen/lost, please inform the issuer immediately. -
Introduction of Overseas Tax RefundUnionPay has launched the UnionPay card (card number starting with 62) overseas tax refund service in cooperation with Global Blue 、Premier Tax Free 、Tax Free Worldwide and GB Tax Free that are the world’s largest tax refund institutions. Such service covers 38 countries and regions. Furthermore, in addition to Global Blue, UnionPay has cooperated with local tax refund institutions in South Korea such as KTIS, Global Tax Free and Easy Tax Refund, all of which may refund taxes directly to UnionPay card accounts.
