Japanese convenience store Circle K Sunkus accepts UnionPay credit cards

UnionPay International announced today that, Circle K Sunkus, the fourth-biggest franchised convenient stores in Japan, will accept UnionPay credit cards (card number starting with 62) since Aug 30 this year. As at other local convenience stores, cardholders can pay without PIN. Previously, the top three convenience store chains in Japan, namely 7-11, Rawson and FamilyMart, have all accepted UnionPay cards. Now, both tourists visiting Japan and local residents can pay with UnionPay cards conveniently.

The 24-hour convenient store plays an important role in the Japanese people’s daily life, and is also an indispensible part in tourists’ experiencing of the local lifestyle. This time, all the over 6,200 Circle K Sunkus stores are going to accept UnionPay credit cards, and these stores mainly locate in popular tourist destinations like Tokyo, Osaka and Hokkaido. Many stores are equipped with the “Kstation” self-service machine with Chinese interface to help the Chinese consumers know about the goods and purchase scenic spots tickets. Moreover, foreign tourists do not need to pay for the tax when paying with UnionPay cards at some Circle K Sunkus stores.

Now, UnionPay International is dedicated to improving its acceptance network in Japan, and is expanding its acceptance footprint to local convenient stores by supporting the specific payment modes familiar to local residents so as to accelerate its business localization. Cardholders do not need to input PIN or sign when paying less than 10,000 yen with UnionPay credit cards, and can pay without PIN when spending over that amount. To ensure payment security, UnionPay International, abiding by international rules, provides risk monitoring, abnormal transaction warning and transaction control together with issuers and acquirers. Issuers will also send messages to inform cardholders of transactions.

The UnionPay card acceptance network in Japan has covered both online and offline. 80,000 ATMs accept UnionPay cards for cash withdrawal, making UnionPay the foreign bankcard brand with the biggest ATM coverage. About 450,000 local merchants accept UnionPay cards, and they not only locate in popular destinations like Tokyo and Osaka, but can also be found in surrounding areas. These merchants include duty-free stores, shopping malls, appliances stores, and drug stores. Meanwhile, Japan-based e-merchant Rakuten Global Market supports UnionPay Online Payment. Several Japanese issuers have issued various UnionPay card products including credit cards, debit cards, and prepaid cards, which are frequently used in dozens of countries and regions.
