Today, UnionPay International declared that, prior to October 1, Lawson and 7-11, two chain convenient stores in Japan, would accept UnionPay credit cards (card number starting with 62) comprehensively by enabling No-PIN transactions which are popular in local convenient stores. In the process of improving acceptance environment, UnionPay International caters to local payment habits for chain stores development. This can more effectively satisfy the card using demands of different cardholders, improve the service capability of UnionPay network and lay a foundation for local business.

There are 120,000 Lawson stores and 18,000 7-11 convenient stores dotted the streets in Japan. They are important places for daily purchasing of local residents and favored by foreign tourists reaching Japan to experience local life. This cooperation between UnionPay International and the two major chain convenient stores enables all of their stores in Japan to accept UnionPay credit cards. In addition, ATMs in 1,000 new Lawson stores  can be used to withdraw Yen cash.

Currently, the majority of UnionPay cards issued by national and regional banks in China can support payment without password. If cardholders of other banks need to use payment without password, they can contact corresponding issuers prior to departure and cancel transaction password. As to the two major chain convenient stores in Japan, both password and signature can be exempted if the purchasing amount of UnionPay credit card is less than 10,000 Yen, and the password can be exempted if the purchasing amount is over 10,000 Yen. To ensure the card using security of cardholders, UnionPay International has joined hands with card issuers and acquirers to provide matched risk monitoring, abnormal transaction warning and transaction control measures as per relevant international rules. In the meantime, the issuers offer the service of short message service to cardholders.

According to Cai Jianbo, the CEO of UnionPay International, as the acceptance environment of UnionPay cards in the Japanese market has been improved, more and more Chinese people prefer to use UnionPay cards in Japan, and the residents from Hong Kong and Korea also choose to use UnionPay cards in Japan frequently, where the UnionPay card issuance is huge. This time, the two major convenient stores in Japan open the payment without password, which not only complies with the card using habits of local residents, but also provides secure and convenient payment service for UnionPay cardholders of surrounding countries in favor of Japan, and creates an effective method for us in expanding similar merchants. In the future, we will also actively promote the application of innovative payment in Japan like UnionPay contactless and mobile payment.

To welcome the large number of tourists visiting Japan during the National Day holiday, Lawson also gives a special offer exclusive to UnionPay credit cardholders. In other words, if the purchasing amount of UnionPay credit cardholders from October 1 to October 7 exceeds 20,000 Yen (including taxes), they can obtain a coupon equal to 200 Yen with valid period from October 1 to November 7.

At present, near 80,000 ATMs in Japan can accept UnionPay cards for cash withdrawal. The coverage rate of ATM in Japan ranks as the first among all foreign bank card brands. About 400,000 merchants can accept UnionPay cards for purchasing, which not only cover major cities like Tokyo and Osaka, but also expand to second and third-tier cities. This includes merchants in various sectors such as hotel, transportation, catering, and entertainment. From October 1, 155 Ito-Yokado department stores in Japan will accept UnionPay debit cards and UnionPay credit cards comprehensively.

In 2007, the first UnionPay card appeared in Japan. Nowadays, many issuers have issued UnionPay credit cards, debit cards, prepaid cards and other products. As a result, an increasing number of Japanese residents choose to use UnionPay cards both in daily purchasing and in international travel.
