UnionPay International announced today that since the end of last year, the UnionPay card acceptance coverage in Kazakhstan has been rapidly expanded, and UnionPay cards have been accepted by nearly 60% of ATMs and over 40% of POS terminals. This year, large-scale UnionPay card issuance is expected in the local market.
As the working conference for pushing ahead the “One Belt and One Road” strategy was recently held in Beijing, the construction plan is looming. As the pivotal in Central Asia, Kazakhstan is of extraordinary strategic significance. More frequent economic, trade and personnel exchanges have also been witnessed between China and Kazakhstan. In this context, UnionPay International has accelerated cooperation with major local institutions including the Kazakhstan Halyk Bank and the Kazkommertsbank since last year. At present, merchants and ATMs accepting UnionPay cards are widely distributed in airports, railway stations, hotels, supermarkets and other transportation hubs and daily living and consumer places in major cities including Astana and Alma-Ata.

The UnionPay card acceptance environment is also becoming increasingly mature in the countries and regions involved in the “One Belt and One Road” strategy. In Pakistan, UnionPay cards are accepted by 70% ATMs and nearly 90% of POS terminals, the acceptance environment is being rapidly optimized, and a variety of UnionPay card products have been issued, which will provide strong support to the construction of Sino-Pakistan economic corridor, a flagship project of “One Belt and One Road”. In Mongolia, UnionPay cards are accepted by nearly all the ATMs and POS terminals. UnionPay card service has been launched in ten countries and regions in Southeast Asia, with nearly all the ATMs and over 70% of POS terminals in Singapore accepting UnionPay cards, and the acceptance in Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam covering 90% of local ATMs. The UnionPay card acceptance is also being constantly expanded in Azerbaijan and Turkey.
