Asia-Pacific Banking Finance:UnionPay moves into mobile payments outside China
China UnionPay, the country’s leading payments network, saw an eightfold increase in the volume of contactless payments made last year by Chinese people travelling internationally.
The payments giant is on a mission to dominate payments globally by expanding its Cloud QuickPass technology, which supports the big mobile phone brands including Huawei, ZTE and Apple.
QuickPass offers Chinese international travellers NFC-based payments similar to those performed with ApplePay. Incidentally, Apple last month introduced its mobile payments system to China through a partnership with China UnionPay to spur usage.
Customers of 19 major Chinese lenders will be able to use ApplePay through UnionPay’s point-of-sales network across the country.
Currently, the state-owned China UnionPay has enabled nearly 180,000 point-of-sale terminals in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore for QuickPass technology.
By comparison, there are more than seven million such terminals in China, the company said.
Rapid growth
In 2015, the volume of transactions at QuickPass terminals showed a year-on-year growth of eight times, “and it has been rising rapidly since the beginning of this year."
"The advantages of our network and technology will be used to accelerate the launch of QuickPass overseas and to deliver a secure and convenient cross-border payment experience to cardholders,"said Cai Jianbo, chief executive of UnionPay International.
Australia, a popular destination for Chinese travellers, is the overseas market with the largest number of QuickPass terminals.
Fully one third of UnionPay-enabled stores in Australia can also accept QuickPass, including Myer, Captain Cook, chain pharmacies and other places which are typically visited by tourists, according to Jianbo.
In partnership with more than 1000 institutions worldwide, the Chinese clearing house has enabled card acceptance more than 150 countries and regions outside the Chinese mainland with issuance in 40 countries and regions.
