2019-04-30

UnionPay International announced today that it has deepened collaboration with Worldline, one of the largest acquirers in Europe, to enable 46,000 merchant locations in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg to accept UnionPay cards, increasing UnionPay’s overall acceptance rate in these three countries to 90%. Previously, Worldline has enabled merchants across over 10 European countries, including Germany and Austria, to accept UnionPay cards. Mr. Shi Wenchao, President of China UnionPay, and Mr. Vincent Roland, Managing Director of Merchants Business of Worldline, attended the signing ceremony.

Currently, UnionPay is accepted in over 90% countries and regions in Europe, with an overall coverage rate of 65%. UnionPay cardholders can enjoy smooth payment services in popular tourist destinations, such as Rome, Madrid, and Lucerne. Through this deepened partnership between UnionPay International and Worldline, UnionPay’s acceptance rate in Belgium will grow substantially to 90% from 50%, while its merchant coverage in the Netherlands will exceed 80%, and its overall acceptance rate in Luxembourg will reach about 100%. UnionPay cards will not only be accepted at shopping malls and duty-free shops, but also be accepted at supermarkets and public transportations. Meanwhile, the POS terminals newly enabled via this partnership will also accept UnionPay mobile QuickPass, which enables UnionPay cardholders to make contactless payments by tapping their mobile phones.

Mr. Shi Wenchao said, UnionPay is strengthening its collaboration with major institutions in Europe in card acceptance, and is attaching greater significance to acceptance optimization in key sectors related to free-and-independent traveling, so as to better meet the demands of free-and-independent travellers to Europe. In the next step, with the mobilization of the payment industry in Europe, UnionPay will update its collaboration mode with Worldline to carry out in-depth cooperation in spheres of mobile payments and financial infrastructures, to promote the localization of UnionPay’s business in Europe.

With UnionPay’s acceptance network continues to expand in Europe, UnionPay is accelerating the localization of its business by providing services for the local customers. So far, multiple UnionPay card products including debit, credit cards and premium cards, have been issued in Portugal. UnionPay is also actively promoting card issuance cooperation with institutions in Italy, to support the trade and personnel exchanges between China and Italy.
