Hong Kong taxis start to accept UnionPay

UnionPay International announced today that Hong Kong taxis start to accept UnionPay cards issued worldwide. Now, cardholders may pay taxi fares by swiping, tapping their UnionPay cards or via UnionPay mobile QuickPass, when taking taxis with the UnionPay logo. It is expected that these taxis will be able to accept UnionPay QR Code payment by year-end. Previously, UnionPay is already accepted by taxis in Taiwan, Australia, Singapore, and Japan.

There are about 18,000 taxis in Hong Kong today and all of them only accept cash. From today on, Hong Kong taxis start to accept UnionPay cards and UnionPay mobile QuickPass, offering more convenient payment service to visitors and the local residents. Next, UnionPay International is endeavored to promote all taxis in Hong Kong to accept UnionPay.

With more and more Chinese are going on free-and-independent or in-depth travels abroad, UnionPay International is continuously optimizing its acceptance in public transportation, including subway, bus and railway, so as to meet tourists’ increasingly diverse payment demands. UnionPay cards are already accepted by the subway in New York, Boston and some other cities in the US as well as the subway in Moscow and Saint Petersburg in Russia. All buses in Macau accept UnionPay mobile QuickPass. Cardholders may also purchase Eurail Pass, THSRC and Taiwan Railway tickets with UnionPay cards online. Several car rentals in the US, Thailand and Europe have also accepted UnionPay cards.

Now, almost all ATMs and POS terminals in Hong Kong accept UnionPay cards, including the POS terminals of several channels and many parking lots. Accepted at about 20,000 POS terminals, UnionPay mobile QuickPass is also gaining steam. In addition, more than 16 million UnionPay cards are issued in Hong Kong, and more and more Hong Kong residents prefer to pay with UnionPay cards in daily life and travels.
